The Daily Show's Eviscerating Mockumentary Of Fox News

advertisement

The Daily Show's John Oliver put togther a stunning smackdown of Fox News on last night's show, punctuated by some damning clips showing egregious comments from some anchors (John Gibson, natch) and some gasp! flip-flopping on certain positions (like, say, executive privilege). Watch as Oliver tries to sneak into Fox HQ dressed as the Statue of Liberty, hosts a pundit shoutfest, and waves many flags.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This is a hilarious, must-watch. The Daily Show gets Fox News spot on.

Very interesting. Will they be doing MSNBC tommorow?

They do what they can daily. But I think they like to pick on CNN & Fox over the others, as the two make themselves such easy targets.

Fox news is too easy a target. It's not work making fun of them.

No, it's not work. But few people question their objectivity and their ethics. In fact, in the latest issue of Time Marc Cherry, the creator of Desperate Housewives, nominated Bill O'Reilly for the Time's list of the year's most influential people:

Why not Bill O'Reilly? For a decade, he has been guiding the national dialogue in a way other media figures can only dream about. When he decides something is important to talk about, we all start talking about it. That is the kind of influence that shapes the world.

Maybe the blogosphere and some Democrats fully understand what Fox News represents and how it has led the corporate news media to its present state of, excuse my French, mind@!$%#ing television, but for the most part few know the true extent of Fox News' impact.

It's beautiful. How the hell does this network continue to be taken seriously?

I take them as seriously as I take any of the other cable networks. MSNBC, in swinging hard to the left, has become a joke. They have positioned themselves as the liberal alternative to Fox, and from what I've seen so far in this primary season, their credibility is at the same level as Fox's , or lower. CNN isn't any better.

This is all true. But they are simply following in Fox's footsteps. Regardless of which side of the political spectrum they are on, none of them have any credibility left. They lost it when they chose to concentrate on profits & "influence" rather than news and education.
